Make the web a little safer

A phishing filter monitors the websites that you visit and warns you if a website is a known or potential hoax or fake. These websites look and feel like the real thing, ie your bank, or online mail service, or facebook, but are well put together fakes designed to trick you into giving away sensitive information such as your user name and password.

The absence of a warning from the phishing filter does not guarantee the security of a site. You must still take reasonable steps to recognise and avoid phishing sites.

Avoiding phishing sites

Avoiding phishing sites requires that you make reasonable judgements about where you browse, and what websites you install software from, or type personal information into. It's similar to walking through the city at night, don't take the dark alley.

  • Don't connect to important websites that ask for a login, such as the bank, or online mail service, or facebook, from a link presented to you from a random e-mail or website, even if that e-mail is from a friend (don't forget their computer may be compromised). Use the address bar at the top of the web browser to type the link in yourself.

  • Don't respond to e-mails from financial institutions, even when they look legitimate, that ask you to log in, verify or change your password. No bank will ever send you an e-mail asking you to log in, but scammers can easily make an official looking copy to misdirect you.
  • Use Gmail to filter your mail, they are very successful at removing almost all spam and phishing.
