Enabling file extension visibility in Windows

To help you work smarter with files, you need to enable the option in Explorer to show file extensions.

  1. click Start then Run
  2. type 'explorer' then click OK
  3. in the menu click Tools then Folder Options
  4. select the View tab
  5. untick the option 'Hide extensions for known file types' and click OK

Learning file extensions takes time, and there's no need to memorise them all immediately. But having them show in Windows allows you to become familiar with a key aspect of safe computing for intermediate computer users.

Despite file extension's limitations and complexity, extensions are so tightly integrated into every component of programming, that for the time being they are here to stay.
